Obverse description First crowned effigy of King James I facing right, rendered in the hammered style characteristic of the early Stuart coinage. The king is depicted with a square-cut beard and wears a crown. The denomination mark appears behind the bust, all contained within a raised inner circle. The circumferential Latin legend and mintmark (thistle) are positioned in the outer field between the inner circle and the coin's edge.
