| Reverse description | A standing allegorical female figure, representing Hope, is depicted facing slightly left in classical draped robes with a billowing cape, her right hand resting upon a large upright admiralty anchor set against a wavy sea at her feet. To the upper right of the central device, a stylised starburst or compass-rose ornament appears in the field. The engraver's initials 'KG' for George Kruger Gray are visible in the lower central field. The bilingual legend SOUTH·AFRICA·1937·SUID·AFRIKA arcs around the upper periphery with decorative stops, while SHILLING curves along the lower portion, all enclosed within a dentillated border. |
