Chinese provincial food grain coupons (粮票) were a direct product of the unified rationing system introduced in 1955, under which the state controlled all grain distribution through work units and household registration. Jiangxi Province, like all others, issued its own coupons valid only within provincial borders — a deliberate design to prevent inter-provincial grain movement outside central planning channels.
By 1978, the system was entering its long decline. National grain rationing was not formally abolished until 1993, but the Deng-era reforms already underway that year would eventually render coupons like this one obsolete within a decade and a half.
