Chinese ration coupons of the Maoist period occupy an odd corner of collectibles — neither banknotes nor stamps in the philatelic sense, but something the hobby has quietly absorbed. Cooking oil coupons were among the most tightly controlled ration categories during the early 1970s, when provincial grain bureaus administered allocations independently, meaning denominations, formats, and validity zones varied significantly from province to province and often year to year.
Anhui's 1973 issues are notable partly because the province had been among the hardest hit during the Great Leap famine of 1959–1961, making oil rationing there carry a weight beyond mere administrative routine.
