Israel's annual Hanukkah coin series, begun in 1958, draws each year from a different Jewish community's lamp tradition — this 1983 issue features the lamp style brought by Yemenite Jews, whose immigration to Israel was largely accomplished through Operation Magic Carpet in 1949–1950, airlifting roughly 49,000 people from Aden. The series is one of the longest-running thematic programs in Israeli numismatics.
KM#123 was struck at the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation facility in Jerusalem, with both proof and regular issues produced for that year's release.
