Obverse description The obverse is entirely covered with a dense multi-line Persian nasta'liq inscription in raised relief, filling the field from rim to rim without a distinct border. A central cartouche contains the mint name Astarabad and the AH date 924, while the surrounding legend bears the full royal titulature of Shah Isma'il I: 'al-Sultan al-'Adil al-Hadi al-Wali Abu'l-Muzaffar Shah Isma'il Bahadur Khan al-Safawi, may God perpetuate his kingdom and sultanate.' The irregular flan, characteristic of early Safavid hammered coinage, results in portions of the marginal legend falling off the coin's edge. The script is executed in a bold, calligraphic style typical of early sixteenth-century Iranian mint production.
