| Reverse description | The reverse is entirely occupied by a multi-line Shi'ite Kalima inscription in raised nasta'liq script, densely arranged across the full field. The central lines bear the shahada formula — 'There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God, Ali is the Friend of God' — while the surrounding inscription enumerates the names of the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shi'ism: Ali, Hasan, Husayn, Ali, Muhammad, Ja'far, Musa, Ali, Muhammad, Ali, and Hasan, terminating with the name of the twelfth Imam. The composition is characteristic of Safavid coinage introduced under Shah Isma'il I as a declaration of the new Twelver Shi'ite state religion. No border or decorative frame is present, the inscription extending to the irregular flan edge. |
