| Reverse description | The reverse is entirely covered by the Shi'a profession of faith and the enumeration of the Twelve Imams in flowing Arabic calligraphy, densely filling the irregular hammered flan. The field is divided between a central zone bearing the Shahada and the name of Ali as the divinely appointed guardian, and a surrounding marginal band listing the names of all twelve Imams of Twelver Shi'ism. The inscription is struck in bold raised relief with characteristic early Safavid intertwining letterforms. This reverse type is the hallmark of Isma'il I's coinage, reflecting his proclamation of Twelver Shi'ism as the state religion of the Safavid Empire. Minor flan cracks and edge irregularities are visible, typical of hammered production of this period. |
