Reverse description An ornate long cross divides the reverse field into four quadrants, its terminals extending to the inner border in a style characteristic of Renaissance Italian minor coinage. The devotional legend SALVS MVNDI, meaning 'Salvation of the World', is distributed around the cross in the surrounding field. The strike is typical of hammered production, resulting in an irregular flan with uneven legend placement. Surface corrosion and wear are consistent with an extensively circulated bronze issue of the mid-to-late sixteenth century.
