Obverse description Bare-headed bearded bust of Pope Gregory XIII facing right, draped in a finely detailed papal cope with ornamental embroidery visible at the truncation. The effigy is rendered in a robust late Renaissance style with strong facial features and a prominent beard. The circular Latin legend GREGORIVS XIII P M runs along the outer border, interrupted at the top by the bust. The coin is struck on a slightly irregular flan typical of hammered billon coinage of the period.
