Castiglione delle Stiviere was a tiny Imperial fief in Lombardy held by the Gonzaga-Castiglione branch — a cadet line that retained minting rights largely because the Holy Roman Emperor had more pressing concerns than policing the coinage of a lordship barely larger than a village. The sesino was the workhorse denomination of northern Italian petty commerce, and local fiefs like this one minted them precisely because larger powers rarely bothered to supply small change at the necessary volume.
