Additional information

Tonga's 1974 coinage series coincided with the country's deep ties to the British Commonwealth and its own carefully managed monetary system under the long reign of Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, who ruled from 1965 until his death in 2006. The National Reserve Bank had only been established in 1989, meaning this piece was issued under earlier monetary arrangements — the brass composition here distinguishes it from the bronze struck in earlier years of the same type.
