Tonga's 1968 coinage series marked the kingdom's first decimal issue, introduced as the pa'anga system replaced the pound sterling-based currency that had tied the island nation to British colonial monetary arrangements. Taufa'ahau Tupou IV had ascended to the throne in 1965 following the death of Queen Sālote, and the new coinage was among the early administrative acts of his reign. The National Reserve Bank of Tonga, itself a young institution, contracted the Royal Mint for production.
