Brunei's Currency Board was established in 1967 specifically to issue the new Brunei dollar following the territory's withdrawal from the Board of Commissioners of Currency Malaya and British Borneo — a shared monetary arrangement that dissolved as Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei each pursued separate currency regimes. This 1-sen piece belongs to that inaugural series, the first coinage issued under the authority of Brunei alone during Omar Ali Saifuddin III's reign, just two years before his abdication in favor of his son Hassanal Bolkiah.
