Obverse description A coiled dragon in high relief occupies the central field, its body curling dynamically and its head turned to the right in a traditional East Asian artistic style. The dragon is encircled by a beaded inner ring, beyond which Chinese characters are arranged in four quadrants reading 大日本 (Great Japan) to the left and 明治十年 (Meiji Year 10) to the right. Dots flank the inscriptions at the cardinal points. The Latin denomination legend '1 SEN' appears in the lower exergue area between two dots, while a toothed milling borders the entire obverse.
