Obverse description Central field displays the denomination in two kanji characters — 一 (ichi, one) above 錢 (sen) — enclosed within a wreath of two rice stalks laden with grain, their heads meeting at the top of the design and their stems bound together at the base with a ribbon. The wreath is rendered in fine relief with naturalistic detail, evoking Japan's agrarian heritage. A rope-pattern border encircles the entire design, framing the composition with a distinctive corded rim.
