Brunei's copper clad steel coinage of this period reflects the country's quiet monetary conservatism during an era of significant regional turbulence — the 1997–98 Asian financial crisis left neighboring currencies in collapse while the Brunei dollar, pegged at parity with the Singapore dollar since 1967, remained unmoved. The Currency Interchangeability Agreement with Singapore, still in force today, means these coins circulated effectively across both territories as legal tender.
