Obverse description Left-facing bust of President Sukarno occupying the central field, depicted wearing the traditional Indonesian peci (black velvet cap) and a military-style collar. The effigy is rendered in moderate relief with a restrained, portrait-like style. The circumferential legend reads PRESIDEN REPUBLIK INDONESIA arching around the upper portion of the coin, with the name SUKARNO positioned along the lower border, flanked on each side by a small decorative rosette stop.

Additional information

Indonesia's 1 sen was rendered economically irrelevant almost from the moment it was struck. Inflation through the late Sukarno period was catastrophic — by 1965, annual inflation exceeded 600% — and the smallest denominations circulated so briefly and so marginally that survivors in any condition above poor are genuinely scarce. Bank Indonesia continued issuing the denomination largely as a formality of the monetary system rather than practical commerce.
