Obverse description Central device depicting a unicorn submerged within a hemispherical vessel or bowl, rendered in a crude, archaic style characteristic of small medieval billon bracteates. The unicorn's head and neck are visible above the rim of the vessel, facing left. The central motif is enclosed within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a broad outer border composed of radiating cusps or tooth-like projections forming a gear-like or rayed ring around the entire circumference of the coin.

Additional information

Johannes VI Ambundi held the Archbishopric of Riga during one of its most embattled stretches — the see was caught between the political pressures of the Teutonic Order, which effectively dominated Livonia, and the ambitions of the Polish-Lithuanian union following Grunwald. The tiny billon seestling was the lowest denomination in Livonian circulation, and pieces of this weight routinely suffered from poor alloy consistency at the Riga mint, meaning silver content varies noticeably across surviving examples.
