| Additional information |
Ercole III d'Este ruled Modena and Reggio as the duchy's last reigning duke, his authority already undermined by the death of the male Este line before him and secured only through inheritance via the female branch. This scudo was struck during a narrow two-year window that preceded the political turbulence of the following decade. When Napoleon's forces swept through northern Italy in 1796, Ercole III fled, and the duchy was absorbed — ending nearly four centuries of Este coinage at Modena.
