| Reverse description | Central shield bearing the plain white cross of the Order of St. John on a hatched field, surmounted by a princely crown and flanked symmetrically by two elaborate branches of olive and flowers issuing from a Maltese cross at the base. The date 1796 is inscribed in the upper field with an eight-pointed star between the digits, and the mintmaster's initials S·J· appear in the lower field below the crossed branch stems. The design is enclosed within a toothed border, the overall composition reflecting the refined engraving tradition of late 18th-century Maltese coinage. |
