| Obverse description | Draped bust of Pope Pius IX facing left, wearing the papal zucchetto and richly ornamented pontifical vestments with elaborate foliate and figural decoration visible at the shoulder. The portrait, engraved by Giuseppe Cerbara, is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair and drapery. The circular legend reads PIVS IX PON MAX ANN IX around the periphery, interrupted at the base by the engraver's initials B·Z· The entire design is framed by a border of raised beads. |
