| Obverse description | Central field bears the papal coat of arms of Paul IV (Carafa arms: barry of six argent and azure with a chief of the Holy See), displayed on a heraldic shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys. The shield is flanked by ornate foliate or scroll supporters. The surrounding legend reads PAVLVS IIII PONT MAX (Paul IV, Supreme Pontiff), disposed in a circular inscription around the periphery with pellet stops separating the words. The die-work is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Roman hammered gold coinage. |
