Obverse description Central field displays the papal arms of Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese), comprising a shield charged with six fleurs-de-lis arranged in the Farnese family arms, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, with elaborate Renaissance scroll mantling flanking the shield. The composition is rendered in high relief in the Italian Renaissance hammered style. The circular Latin legend reads PAVLVS III PONT MAX, disposed around the periphery and separated by pellets, within a beaded or rope inner border.
