Reverse description Central field features an ornate floriated cross with foliate terminals at each arm, dividing the field into four quadrants; the lower two quadrants each contain a small oval or round shield bearing a castle, serving as mint marks for the Bologna mint. A small ornamental device appears above the cross at the top of the inner field. The circular legend BONONIA٠DOCET٠ (Bologna teaches) surrounds the design within a beaded border, with a decorative sun-face or rosette serving as a stop between the beginning and end of the legend.
