Obverse description Central shield bearing the Farnese arms (six fleurs-de-lis arranged 1-2-3), surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, all within a beaded inner circle. The papal coat of arms is rendered in high relief with finely detailed ornamental mantling. The circular legend in Latin reads PAVLVS III PONT MAX, identifying Pope Paul III as Supreme Pontiff. The entire design is framed by a beaded border characteristic of Renaissance-period hammered gold coinage.
