Obverse description Central papal shield (escutcheon) bearing six fleurs-de-lis arranged in the Farnese arms, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, all within a decorative cartouche. The surrounding circular legend reads PAV٠III٠P٠ ٠M٠PLAC٠D٠, identifying Pope Paul III as Pontifex Maximus and Duke of Piacenza. The design is executed in high relief characteristic of hammered Renaissance gold coinage.

The bold, symmetrical cross design fills the field in the characteristic style of 16th-century Italian hammered gold coinage.
