Obverse description The obverse displays the papal coat of arms of Pope Paul III (Alessandro Farnese) at center, featuring a shield charged with six fleurs-de-lis arranged in the Farnese family pattern, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. The shield is framed by elaborate Renaissance scrollwork and acanthus ornamentation rendered in fine relief, characteristic of early sixteenth-century Roman die-cutting. The circular Latin legend · PAVLVS · III · · PONT · MAX · runs along the outer border, identifying the pontiff as Paul III, Supreme Pontiff. The entire design exhibits the irregular flan and bold, slightly uneven strike typical of hammered gold coinage of the period.
