Obverse description The obverse features the papal arms of Gregory XIII within an ornate oval shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys, the emblematic insignia of the Holy See. The coat of arms displays the distinctive dragon device associated with the Boncompagni family, rendered in fine relief typical of late sixteenth-century Italian hammered gold coinage. The shield is flanked by decorative foliate elements characteristic of the Bolognese mint style of this period. The circular legend surrounds the central device, reading in Latin around the full periphery of the coin within a beaded border.
