Obverse description Draped bust of Pope Gregory XIII facing right, wearing the papal cope adorned with decorative embroidery and the pontifical vestments, with a long flowing beard rendered in fine detail. The effigy is set within a beaded border, with the circular Latin legend distributed around the periphery incorporating the papal name, numeral, title, and mint abbreviation. The portrait is executed in the Renaissance hammered style typical of late sixteenth-century papal coinage from Ancona.
