| Obverse description | Within a beaded border, the arms of Lucca — a shield divided diagonally, adorned with acanthus leaf and scroll mantling — occupies the central field. The date is divided on either side of a radiant sun symbol, and the surrounding Latin legend names Charles V as Emperor along with the city's motto LIBERTAS. |

Lucca's scudo del sole took its name from the sun emblem borrowed from French royal coinage — the *écu au soleil* — a deliberate visual alignment with French prestige at a moment when the small republic was navigating the predatory competition between France and the Habsburgs for dominance over northern Italy. Lucca managed to remain formally independent through the entire period, a remarkable feat of diplomatic neutrality that its coinage quietly reinforced by borrowing imagery from whichever power was most useful to flatter.
