Obverse description Central field bears the crowned quartered coat of arms of Savoy, displaying the dynastic quarters of Savoy, Montferrat, Chablais, and Aosta, flanked by decorative mantling. The shield is surmounted by a ducal crown with visible battlements. A circular Latin legend surrounds the armorial device, reading CAR. EM. D. G. DVX. SAB. P. P., identifying Charles Emmanuel I as Duke of Savoy by the grace of God. The entire design is executed in the robust hammered style characteristic of late sixteenth-century Savoyard gold coinage.
