| Obverse description | Central field bears the crowned quartered coat of arms of Savoy, displaying the dynastic quarters of Savoy, Montferrat, Chablais, and Aosta, flanked by decorative mantling. The shield is surmounted by a ducal crown with visible battlements. A circular Latin legend surrounds the armorial device, reading CAR. EM. D. G. DVX. SAB. P. P., identifying Charles Emmanuel I as Duke of Savoy by the grace of God. The entire design is executed in the robust hammered style characteristic of late sixteenth-century Savoyard gold coinage. |
