Obverse description Crowned quartered coat of arms of the Ferrero-Fieschi family occupying the central field, the shield displaying the combined heraldic bearings of the marquessate and supported by rampant lions as shield-holders. The arms are surmounted by a marquess's crown of elaborate workmanship. The circumferential Latin legend reads BESSVS FER FL MAR MESS, identifying Besso Ferrero-Fieschi as Marquess of Masserano, separated by decorative stops. The die work is characteristic of late sixteenth-century Italian hammered gold coinage.
