Reverse description Central field features an elaborate ornamental cross with decorative foliate terminals extending toward the border, dividing the field into quadrants. Scrolling arabesque or floral ornaments occupy the spaces between the arms of the cross, lending the design a refined Renaissance aesthetic. The encircling Latin legend IN HOC CORONAT DEVS 1581 references divine coronation and provides the issue date. The legend is separated from the central device by a beaded inner border. The overall die work is consistent with the hammered coinage tradition of the minor Italian lordships of the late sixteenth century.
