Obverse description The arms of the Republic of Lucca displayed at centre: an ornate cartouche-shaped shield bearing a diagonal band inscribed LIBERTAS, supported on either side by elaborate foliate scrollwork and surmounted by a crown. Two rampant lion supporters flank the shield within the decorative mantling. The circumferential Latin legend reads REIP•LVC•A CAROLO•IIII•IMP, referencing the Republic of Lucca under the suzerainty of Emperor Charles IV, separated from the inner device by a beaded border.
