Obverse description Quartered coat of arms of the Gonzaga dynasty of Mantua, surmounted by a ducal crown, featuring alternating quarters with a rampant lion and horizontal barry stripes, supported by ornamental mantling. The shield is centrally placed within the field. A partial circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, reading MANTVAE ANNO SALVTIS 1629, interrupted by the edge of the irregularly shaped flan. The die work is bold and characteristic of emergency siege coinage.
