| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a single episcopal shield of arms with a characteristic bumpy or lobed top and curved bottom, the escutcheon bearing horizontal bars (barry) flanked by two curved supporters. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, separated by pellet stops, reads IODOCVS · RE · EP : D · 46 ·, an abbreviated Latin inscription identifying Jodokus von der Recke as Bishop of Dorpat, with the date 46 (for 1546) incorporated into the legend. The coin is struck on an irregular flan, typical of mid-sixteenth-century hammered billon coinage from the Baltic region. |
