Reverse description The Virgin Mary, crowned and standing upon a crescent moon, depicted in full figure facing forward, holding the Christ Child in her left arm and a scepter in her right hand. The devotional legend SVSCIPE ET PROTEGE M P encircles the central figure, invoking her patronage and protection. The composition reflects the strong Marian devotion characteristic of Catholic ecclesiastical coinage of the Holy Roman Empire in the eighteenth century.

Additional information

Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim ruled as Prince-Bishop of both Würzburg and Bamberg simultaneously from 1757, an unusual dual tenure that made him one of the most powerful ecclesiastical princes in the Holy Roman Empire during the Seven Years' War. The 1763 date places this issue in the year the Peace of Hubertusburg ended that conflict — a war that had severely disrupted Franconian finances and left many smaller ecclesiastical mints scrambling to restore confidence in local billon coinage.
