Obverse description The Hamburg city arms — a three-towered white castle gateway on a red field — displayed within a beaded inner circle, with the date 1553 appearing at the conclusion of the peripheral legend. The towers are rendered in fine relief characteristic of mid-16th century hammered coinage. The circumscriptional legend in Latin runs along the outer border of the flan.
