Reverse description A pointed heraldic shield bearing the Hamburg castle arms is superimposed at the centre of a floriated long cross, the four arms of which extend to the beaded inner circle and terminate in trefoil or pellet ornaments, with pellets adorning each angle between the cross arms. This arrangement is characteristic of the late 15th-century Hamburg Schilling type. The surrounding Latin legend, separated by lis stops, reads ✠ SIGNO (lis) CRVCIS (lis) SALVEMVR, translating as 'By the sign of the cross may we be saved.'
