Additional information

Dietrich III Resler held the Bishopric of Dorpat from 1424 until his death in 1441, presiding over a see caught between the competing pressures of the Livonian Order and the Hanseatic trading network centered on Reval and Riga. The Scherf — a fraction too small for most serious commerce — circulated primarily among the lowest-level market transactions in the Baltic urban economy. Dorpat's episcopal mint operated with considerable irregularity during this period, which accounts for the wide stylistic variation documented across the Haljak 545 type.
