Additional information

Somalia gained independence in 1960 through the union of the former Italian Trust Territory of Somalia and British Somaliland, and this 1967 issue belongs to the Republic's first decimal coinage series — one of the few tangible institutional projects completed before the military coup of October 1969 that brought Siad Barre to power and abruptly ended the civilian government. Coins of this type saw only about two years of legitimate republican circulation before the political order that authorized them ceased to exist.
