Amanullah Khan declared Afghan independence from British control in April 1919, triggering the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The subsequent Treaty of Rawalpindi, signed that August, formally restored Afghanistan's right to conduct its own foreign affairs — a right Britain had held since 1879. This coin belongs to the first independent Afghan coinage issued under that restored sovereignty, struck in the same year the war was fought.
