The bullet coinage that preceded this series had served Siam for centuries, but pressure from Western trading partners — who found the pod duang impossible to weigh and verify efficiently — forced Rama IV and then Rama V to transition toward milled Western-style coinage. This salueng was part of that sustained effort, struck across a span of roughly twenty-five years without date recording, which is why attribution relies on subtle die characteristics and metal fineness rather than any inscribed year.
