Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Royal Arms of Scotland, depicting a rampant lion within a shield surmounted by an imperial crown, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. Flanking the shield are small floral ornaments. The circumferential legend in Latin reads: MARIA & HENRIC DEI GRA R & R SCOTORV, identifying the joint sovereigns Mary and Henry (Darnley) as Queen and King of Scots by the grace of God. The hammered fabric imparts a characteristic irregular planchet, with bold lettering in a Gothic-influenced style typical of mid-sixteenth-century Scottish coinage. Two countermarks, identified as the crowned thistle applied in 1578, are visible in the field to either side of the shield.
