| Obverse description | Queen Elizabeth I is depicted enthroned and facing three-quarters in a Tudor galleon, holding an orb in her left hand and a sceptre in her right. The ship is elaborately detailed with double-rose ornaments, three ropes on each side, two sails forward and four aft, and the royal standard bearing the letter 'E' at the masthead with additional sails on the bowsprit. The hull rides above calm waters rendered in a stylised manner. The regal effigy is set within the ship's structure, the whole composition enclosed by the circumferential Latin legend. The design is executed in the finely worked hammered tradition characteristic of the Elizabethan mint. |
