Pick R1 belongs to a distinct regional subseries: the "R" prefix in the Pick catalog denotes notes issued specifically for Riau Archipelago, a group of islands off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula where the Indonesian government introduced regionally restricted currency in the early 1960s to combat smuggling and cross-border currency arbitrage with Malaya and Singapore.
The Riau rupiah circulated at par with the standard rupiah but was not legal tender on the Indonesian mainland — a deliberate policy to prevent currency outflows through the porous island borders. The series was withdrawn in 1964 when the regional currency experiment was abandoned.
