Indonesia's 1961 low-denomination notes were issued during a period of severe monetary instability under Sukarno's Guided Democracy, when chronic deficit spending and money-printing had begun eroding public confidence in the rupiah well ahead of the full inflationary collapse later in the decade. This 1 Rupiah belongs to a series that was essentially redundant on arrival — purchasing power at the unit level had already become negligible for most transactions.
The series was superseded by the catastrophic currency reform of December 1965, when the New Order government replaced 1,000 old rupiah with 1 new rupiah, effectively annihilating whatever residual value notes like this retained.
