Sri Lanka redenominated its currency in 1978 when the republic was renamed from Ceylon, but the coinage designs and specifications went through several quiet revisions across the following decades with little public announcement. The KM#166 type was struck well into Sri Lanka's civil war years, when the LTTE conflict was placing significant strain on government finances — yet the coin itself saw perfectly ordinary circulation, the grinding economics of insurgency rarely visible in the currency of the opposing state.
