| Obverse description | At center, the national emblem of Pakistan comprising a large crescent moon opening to the right with a five-pointed star in the upper interior, both in raised relief against a plain field. Flanking the lower portion of the crescent are two symmetrical decorative panels with parallel line hatching, above an olive wreath tied at the base whose sprays extend to either side. Pakistan shifted to aluminium for the rupee in the late 1970s as copper-nickel costs made the older coins increasingly uneconomical to produce. The "smaller type" designation distinguishes this issue from the larger-diameter predecessor, a reduction driven by the mint's need to bring metal costs further in line with face value — a recurring pressure in South Asian coinage of the period.
