Obverse description Central field bears a multi-line Persian legend in Naskh script arranged in horizontal registers, reading: 'Sikka zad bar haft kishwar saya fazl Ilah Hami ud-din Muhammad Shah Alam Badshah,' meaning 'Defender of the religion of Muhammad, Shah Alam Emperor, Shadow of the Divine Favour, put his stamp on the seven climes.' The regnal year in the Hijri calendar, AH 1229, appears prominently within or below the legend. The inscription is enclosed within a circular border typical of late Mughal-style coinage as adopted by the Bengal Presidency.
